It's like a treasure hunt, digging for golden potatoes<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mfmays0D1zg/Thx7J4byI2I/AAAAAAAABuw/JmorkLEXxBI/s1600/Pictures+486.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" m$="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mfmays0D1zg/Thx7J4byI2I/AAAAAAAABuw/JmorkLEXxBI/s320/Pictures+486.jpg" width="320px" /></a></div><br />
Haven't the Busy Beez done well? We have a nice healthy harvest of potatoes, peas, onions and garlic.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dVfJtRvhinU/Thx7M3iMNrI/AAAAAAAABu0/yu8TP7p13po/s1600/Pictures+487.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" m$="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dVfJtRvhinU/Thx7M3iMNrI/AAAAAAAABu0/yu8TP7p13po/s320/Pictures+487.jpg" width="320px" /></a></div><br />
We've had so much success with the tomato plants that the Busy Beez have sold a great deal of plants to raise money for gardening essentials such as compost. They sold like the proverbial hot cakes. We still have a lot of plants in the sandpit that will soon begin to form fruit. Yes, tomoatoes are fruit! They have seeds inside, which vegetables do not have.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OhI0Vd9oFNI/Thx7RrAF-rI/AAAAAAAABu4/ePzKu46JqMY/s1600/Pictures+484.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" m$="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OhI0Vd9oFNI/Thx7RrAF-rI/AAAAAAAABu4/ePzKu46JqMY/s320/Pictures+484.jpg" width="320px" /></a></div><br />
Yet more potatoes, these will be harvested in the autumn.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZtLlXcLXky0/Thx7V0t1fSI/AAAAAAAABu8/7LXKsnAcj1s/s1600/Pictures+485.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" m$="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZtLlXcLXky0/Thx7V0t1fSI/AAAAAAAABu8/7LXKsnAcj1s/s320/Pictures+485.jpg" width="320px" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-X7Bnp76V0Tc/Thx7ZNdaNJI/AAAAAAAABvA/-kuPtHEnYW8/s1600/Pictures+488.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" m$="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-X7Bnp76V0Tc/Thx7ZNdaNJI/AAAAAAAABvA/-kuPtHEnYW8/s320/Pictures+488.jpg" width="320px" /></a></div><br />
Watering is all important even if it's been raining, this is because the foliage of the plants can cover the soil below like an umbrella, keeping off the rain. It is also the favoured task for the Beez.<br />
<br />

Have a wonderful summer holiday. If you've bought a tomato plant or two, do take photographs of your own harvest, and we'll add them to the blog!Rambling Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06461179407269357363noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1383200505756656522.post-81969032989662538332011-07-12T09:48:00.000-07:002011-07-12T09:48:33.806-07:00Lazy Summer DaysThere's still time to plant for some late summer - autumn colour. Among these young seedlings are Calendular, also known as Marigolds. Bright colour that will hopefully be in full swing for our return in September.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KIdr83lLXIY/Thx20zTlNAI/AAAAAAAABuE/gcK81tkwNTQ/s1600/Pictures+470.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" m$="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KIdr83lLXIY/Thx20zTlNAI/AAAAAAAABuE/gcK81tkwNTQ/s320/Pictures+470.jpg" width="320px" /></a></div><br />
A large meadow isn't always necessary for some insect-friendly blooms.<br />

These brightly coloured begonias have interesting leaves, as do the pelargoniums. A warm greeting to the school entrance, I think you'll agree.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">May is named after the Greek goddess Maia. The Anglo-Saxon name for May was Tri-Milchi due to the cows being let out onto the lush green meadows and being able to be milked three times a day. These are the Hebe cuttings taken back in the autumn. They've been pinched out to allow them to become bushier. They will remain in the pots over the next year to establish a little more.<br />

Bees. A sure sign that spring is upon us. In fact we have just enjoyed the warmest April on record, with temperatures in the Shooters Grove garden reaching well into the 20's.<br />
<br />

The wam weather has urged lots of seeds to germinate. From a mixed flower selection to Cornflowers and Calendula, the tiny seedlings are just beginning to emerge.<br />
<br />

Do you recall the tiny tree whips we planted back in March? Look how well they've filled out now!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DEQ865iUAX4/TdQnmjFkbQI/AAAAAAAABpc/JrWZn7SBJJs/s1600/Pictures+478.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" j8="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DEQ865iUAX4/TdQnmjFkbQI/AAAAAAAABpc/JrWZn7SBJJs/s320/Pictures+478.jpg" width="320px" /></a></div><br />
And the beans. We lost a few over the harsh winter...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tZQbnP-F-ig/TdQnsk4cx4I/AAAAAAAABpg/1vPR3BppsXY/s1600/Pictures+479.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" j8="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tZQbnP-F-ig/TdQnsk4cx4I/AAAAAAAABpg/1vPR3BppsXY/s320/Pictures+479.jpg" width="320px" /></a></div><br />
...but the recent weather has been so useful to play catch up with new beans, peas and tomatoes.<br />
<br />

The potatoes have some very strong growth, which looks extremely promising.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9Z4FBNgF2Pk/TdQn_s1vGCI/AAAAAAAABpw/Kr3JuYG-mAc/s1600/Pictures+484.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240px" j8="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9Z4FBNgF2Pk/TdQn_s1vGCI/AAAAAAAABpw/Kr3JuYG-mAc/s320/Pictures+484.jpg" width="320px" /></a></div><br />
Peas! Did you know that you can eat the fresh green shoots of peas. They taste just like peas too! Sow a few peas every two weeks for a succession, and simply pinch off a couple of inches when they get to around a foot long. The pinching out of these tasty shoots will make the pea plants bushier and they can be pinched out around 5 or 6 times a apiece.<br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;">* Daffodils originated in south west Europe.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">* These days, the majority of daffodils are grown in the Channel Islands, Great Britain, The Netherlands and the Isles of Scilly. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;">* The sap of daffodils can be damaging to other flowers. If you’ve picked them for the house, then it’s best to leave them in water on their own for at least 12 hours, before mixing them with other flowers.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">* The national emblem of Wales is a daffodil and Welsh people usually wear daffodils on St. David’s Day. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">* The Victorians thought daffodils were symbol of regard. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

Winter still has it's icy fingers wrapped tightly around the gardens of Shooter's Grove Primary School, with no intentions of releasing any time soon.<br />
<br />
But something is stirring beneath the cold hard ground. Something that was planted long ago, and forgotten about. Bulbs. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TUwoyM7QfEI/AAAAAAAABfc/bFlvh2QSW2I/s1600/Pictures+229.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" h5="true" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TUwoyM7QfEI/AAAAAAAABfc/bFlvh2QSW2I/s320/Pictures+229.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Around about now, these little patches of bright green seem to pop up overnight, and in a matter of weeks will be braving the chill to put on their welcoming display.<br />
<br />
Talking of braving the chill, take a peek at this brighlty coloured polyanthus. In a trough at the entrance to the yard, it almost demands attention from the infants as they arrive for school.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TUwo1fk2UFI/AAAAAAAABfg/ySjCLMi-s_A/s1600/Pictures+230.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" h5="true" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TUwo1fk2UFI/AAAAAAAABfg/ySjCLMi-s_A/s320/Pictures+230.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
A few new arrivals to the garden look on expectantly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TUwo8cHLgFI/AAAAAAAABfk/3MEGNQqD5RI/s1600/Pictures+231.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" h5="true" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TUwo8cHLgFI/AAAAAAAABfk/3MEGNQqD5RI/s320/Pictures+231.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
More cheerful faces. These pansies aren't at all shy nestled in amongst the hebes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TUwpAOe6jDI/AAAAAAAABfo/Q79GfK7ZLgY/s1600/Pictures+232.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" h5="true" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TUwpAOe6jDI/AAAAAAAABfo/Q79GfK7ZLgY/s320/Pictures+232.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Of course the Busy Beez gardening club is not all about flowers. We grow produce too, and this is a great time to catch up with what's been quietly getting on with it in the cold frame. Onions. Don't they look fab?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TUwpDP9tAbI/AAAAAAAABfs/KMZf_se55M4/s1600/Pictures+233.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" h5="true" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TUwpDP9tAbI/AAAAAAAABfs/KMZf_se55M4/s320/Pictures+233.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
The beans unfortunately struggled through the heavy snowfalls and sustained sub-zero temperatures, but the onions planted outside in the old sandpit are more than making up for it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TUwpJwx3bEI/AAAAAAAABfw/yCWrhTb2LVM/s1600/Pictures+236.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" h5="true" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TUwpJwx3bEI/AAAAAAAABfw/yCWrhTb2LVM/s320/Pictures+236.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
And last but not least, this ornamental cabbage just had to have a look-in. The colder temperatures, the more vivid the colour. It's a real beauty!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TUwpNeFDpdI/AAAAAAAABf0/jxbXoak5FFQ/s1600/Pictures+234.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" h5="true" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TUwpNeFDpdI/AAAAAAAABf0/jxbXoak5FFQ/s320/Pictures+234.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It's difficult to imagine wamer temperatures and enough sunshine to get the garden into full bloom once more, but it is on it's way, slowly. Each day the sun climbs just a little higher in the sky. The sun sets just that little bit later. Spring is just around the corner.</div></div>Rambling Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06461179407269357363noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1383200505756656522.post-46712369851275425892010-12-17T03:36:00.000-08:002010-12-17T03:36:58.620-08:00Wintery Close<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">Did you know that it has been one of the coldest starts to winter since records began? Usually the worst of our winter weather is in January and February, so it came of a bit of a surprise, when in November, winter arrived early.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">We have broken records here in Sheffield. 28th November saw record minumum temperatures of -7.2 C in the centre of Sheffield. On 1st December, the depth of level snow was recorded as 38cm in the city centre. Shooter's Grove managed a little more, as we're higher up. We measured 46cm! This is the deepest December snow since records began in 1882.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

It's always wet and windy, and this week has been no exception.<br />
All good for the gardens. <br />
<br />
More tidying up to be done and more planting. <br />
<br />
The hanging baskets are filled with the jewels that are Winter Pansies.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TKzO2EhjfpI/AAAAAAAABS8/UIPJcT_T9tw/s1600/Pictures+291.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" ex="true" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TKzO2EhjfpI/AAAAAAAABS8/UIPJcT_T9tw/s320/Pictures+291.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And filling out the spaces in the Veg-e-tables.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TKzPanFVKQI/AAAAAAAABTA/XaRpS8UF7-8/s1600/Pictures+293.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" ex="true" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TKzPanFVKQI/AAAAAAAABTA/XaRpS8UF7-8/s320/Pictures+293.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Beneath these bedding plants lie the bulbs for Spring colour.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TKzREnmbjaI/AAAAAAAABTY/Nf8DpbPN2Hs/s1600/Pictures+292.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" ex="true" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TKzREnmbjaI/AAAAAAAABTY/Nf8DpbPN2Hs/s320/Pictures+292.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TKzRhl4ieUI/AAAAAAAABTg/BLymwObsg4M/s1600/Pictures+300.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" ex="true" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TKzRhl4ieUI/AAAAAAAABTg/BLymwObsg4M/s320/Pictures+300.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Among the pansies, the Busy Beez have planted some ornamental cabbages. These tolerate the winters extremely well, and often the colour intensifies as the the temperature drops.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TKzRo85bp0I/AAAAAAAABTk/XYFfZDZLe1s/s1600/Pictures+301.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" ex="true" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TKzRo85bp0I/AAAAAAAABTk/XYFfZDZLe1s/s320/Pictures+301.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
And finally our crop of potatoes. The Y2 children will be using some of these for various experiments in the coming days.<br />

A time to plant for the following seasons. The last of the Pumpkin plants removed, and it's time to get your hands dirty and bury Daffodils. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TJkEkYdragI/AAAAAAAABRk/FdC7jlirIHA/s1600/DSCN0306.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" qx="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TJkEkYdragI/AAAAAAAABRk/FdC7jlirIHA/s320/DSCN0306.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The Busy Beez have chosen various dwarf Narcissi, or miniature Daffodils. They don't look much right now, but in the coldest months, these little packages of sunshine will push their way through to bloom and cheer on the dullest of days.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TJkFCXG0ytI/AAAAAAAABRs/Z4e0L75kMj0/s1600/DSCN0310.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" qx="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TJkFCXG0ytI/AAAAAAAABRs/Z4e0L75kMj0/s320/DSCN0310.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In the centre of each of these containers the Beez planted a small Hebe. Over the coming months, and even years, these beautiful shrubs will attract bees and butterflies.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div>Can I take a moment to mention that the 'Let's Grow' campaign has begun in Morrison's stores and we would greatly appreciate the vouchers. The children can either hand them into the teacher, or you can pop into the Parent's Room (the 'Hut' beside the Nursery), where our hardworking team of parent volunteers will collect them.<br />

<br />
Our pumpkin patch isn't quite sure of what it wants to produce. Pumpkins were certainly planted, but what is cropping is anyone's guess!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TGrVHGRvItI/AAAAAAAABKM/FsKEn1lucy4/s1600/Pictures+266.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" ox="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TGrVHGRvItI/AAAAAAAABKM/FsKEn1lucy4/s320/Pictures+266.jpg" /></a></div><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The young tree has been cut down in the Junior Bed, making it a very different looking space.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In the Junior 'Veg-e-tables' we definitely planted courgettes, but if you're not quick enough at picking them, they very quickly grow into marrows!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

And what about this whopper! If we don't manage to grow anything resembling a fat orange pumpkin for the Halloween Disco, maybe this fellow can be carved into a Hulk or Frankenstein!!<br />

What appeared as something tiny last week, is now big enough to pick!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TFlpBcNIboI/AAAAAAAABIE/nC75O_6iP10/s1600/Pictures+255.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" bx="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TFlpBcNIboI/AAAAAAAABIE/nC75O_6iP10/s320/Pictures+255.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">With plenty more to pick in the future. These are Courgette 'Black Beauty' from the BBC's Dig In campaign.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TFlpEpRgQcI/AAAAAAAABIM/OUHfkZIFOlQ/s1600/Pictures+257.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" bx="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TFlpEpRgQcI/AAAAAAAABIM/OUHfkZIFOlQ/s320/Pictures+257.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We shall have to cut some of the large leaves on the courgette plants back soon to allow what sun we do get to ripen the tomatoes growing behind. In the meantime, all the male flowers were removed.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

It's eerily quiet in the Shooter's Grove gardens. School's out but there is still so much happening in the garden. Watering of course is a must, but since we've broken up blackflies have moved into one of the pumpkin patches. These were rubbed off between finger and thumb, not a pleasant task, but a necessary one to help keep the numbers down on the forming flowers, behind each a bulbous swelling is forming which will hopefully bring fruit large enough to carve for Hallowe'en.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TFLTAakpsuI/AAAAAAAABCU/HplGh0fb3g0/s1600/Pictures+190.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" bx="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TFLTAakpsuI/AAAAAAAABCU/HplGh0fb3g0/s320/Pictures+190.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

We shall only allow two or three pumkins to form in each patch. This should allow the plants concentrate their energy into creating larger pumpkins.<br />
<br />
The heady scent of these lillies fills the air. Perhaps in subsequent years, they will open before the school break for Summer to be fully appreciated.<br />

Mrs Shaw is leaving us with a most generous gift of plants to re-stock our carpark bed.<br />
<br />
Our final Busy Beez Gardening Club session was brought forward a day as heavy rain is forecast for our usual Tuesday, and we are eager to get these lovely beauties into the ground before we break for the Summer Holidays. However, before we can plant we must clear the ground.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TESCIphAFBI/AAAAAAAAA9U/Z_j5cI7NtZw/s1600/Pictures+251.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hw="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TESCIphAFBI/AAAAAAAAA9U/Z_j5cI7NtZw/s320/Pictures+251.jpg" /></a></div><br />
The bed, which overlooks the courtyard was full of weeds, particularly thistles. Fortunately we have a light sandy soil, which makes weeding easier. The whole area was then forked over, and some good quality top soil added. An over grown hebe with a huge clump of dandelions was dug up, trimmed, separated from the weed and replanted, as was a leggy evergreen, possibly a 'Birds Nest Spruce'. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TESGjF5JDRI/AAAAAAAAA9c/CMhZGBI6E5E/s1600/Pictures+252.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hw="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TESGjF5JDRI/AAAAAAAAA9c/CMhZGBI6E5E/s320/Pictures+252.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Time for the new plants. First up a trio of sugar-candy-pink Hydrangeas. Also known as Hortensia, these mopheads come in colours ranging from white, red, pink, purple or even blue if your soil is acid enough. They begin flowering in the late Spring and Summer, and continue right through to the Autumn, often with changing colours in the blooms. The dried flower heads will be kept on the plant over the winter months to help protect the emerging young buds from frosts, and provide a little interest in the border over the quieter seasons.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TESKiC0X4cI/AAAAAAAAA9k/JsSE0XgWVe0/s1600/Pictures+257.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hw="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TESKiC0X4cI/AAAAAAAAA9k/JsSE0XgWVe0/s320/Pictures+257.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Next are two Gaura's, or Bee Blossoms. This variety is called 'Tutti Frutti' with shocking pink flowers. These plants should spread readily creating a thick carpet from their rhyzomes underground, and filling in bare spaces to help prevent weeds setting in.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TESKwCEzk8I/AAAAAAAAA9s/ukTfuLH3i9A/s1600/Pictures+255.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hw="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TESKwCEzk8I/AAAAAAAAA9s/ukTfuLH3i9A/s320/Pictures+255.jpg" /></a></div><br />
And finally to the elegant white fragrant blooms of Phlox Carolina 'Miss Lingard'. With it's shiny foliage and pure white flowers, this perennial is often called the 'Wedding Phlox' and is a magnet to butterflies.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TESW1ufnPNI/AAAAAAAAA90/jGrLeJiCDLw/s1600/Pictures+253.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hw="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TESW1ufnPNI/AAAAAAAAA90/jGrLeJiCDLw/s320/Pictures+253.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Once bedded into their new homes, the plants were given a thorough watering by our Busy Beez, and a thick layer of bark mulch added to help keep the moisture in and the weeds out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TESX06pnw0I/AAAAAAAAA98/LTg0nxEA2y0/s1600/Pictures+259.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hw="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TESX06pnw0I/AAAAAAAAA98/LTg0nxEA2y0/s320/Pictures+259.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">A quick inspection of the Enviromental Garden before we break reveals a massive shrub alive with the buzzing and fluttering of a great many insects. Commonly known as The Butterfly Bush, this huge Buddleia is awash with panicles of purple flowers each visted by bees and butterflies, of course.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TESa8XcayjI/AAAAAAAAA-E/Ys2eL0ksBgs/s1600/Pictures+263.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hw="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TESa8XcayjI/AAAAAAAAA-E/Ys2eL0ksBgs/s320/Pictures+263.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TESbXvYxOUI/AAAAAAAAA-M/2PXEHixThY0/s1600/Pictures+265.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hw="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TESbXvYxOUI/AAAAAAAAA-M/2PXEHixThY0/s320/Pictures+265.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The size of this plant is perfect for our large Enviromental Garden, but in the Spring we shall cut this magnificent monster by two thirds. It might seem quite a dramatic prune, but it will pay us back with even more blooms next Summer while encouraging a strong healthy framework. In smaller gardens, the same can be achieved from a smaller plant and kept to a managable size by cutting the shrub back to around 60cm from ground level each Spring.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TESeRLpsI6I/AAAAAAAAA-U/Cc1xYoS4H1M/s1600/Pictures+260.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hw="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TESeRLpsI6I/AAAAAAAAA-U/Cc1xYoS4H1M/s320/Pictures+260.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Nestled among the tall white Asters, this vibrant rambling Rose winds it's way through the boundary of the Enviromental Garden. Once the clusters of intense pink blossoms have passed, the Rose will carry on it's show well into the Autumn with hips.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TESgmU_TAKI/AAAAAAAAA-c/UZu04MtIKVw/s1600/Pictures+261.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hw="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TESgmU_TAKI/AAAAAAAAA-c/UZu04MtIKVw/s320/Pictures+261.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">During the holidays, the gardens will continue to be cared for and the Busy Beez Gardening Blog will be updated from time to time, so be sure to stop by and see how things are progressing.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

Jostling for position among the Hardy Geranium foliage and the Potentilla shrub with it's acid yellow blooms, the swelling orange buds of the Crocosmias have begun to appear. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TD2tArUVmNI/AAAAAAAAA7M/ynrhNiXK-yE/s1600/Pictures+236.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" rw="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TD2tArUVmNI/AAAAAAAAA7M/ynrhNiXK-yE/s320/Pictures+236.jpg" /></a></div><br />
The recent rainfall has been a welcome treat for all of the plants, which have in turn responded by putting on a bit of a growth spurt. There is a downside to the warm and wet weather though, being favourable conditions of weeds too. Weeds that need removing before flowering, setting seed and taking over the flowerbeds.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TD2t6d5KDfI/AAAAAAAAA7U/gsCiJlMV1Qc/s1600/Pictures+235.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" rw="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TD2t6d5KDfI/AAAAAAAAA7U/gsCiJlMV1Qc/s320/Pictures+235.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Each morning while waiting for the day to begin, there have been a group of Y2 boys eagerly investigating the large hummocks of foliage in the Veg-e-tables for signs of flowers. Whilst there is still no sign on the pumpkin plants, there have been a number of yellow blooms on the courgette plants. Unfortunately so far these flowers have all been male, and need removing as it is the female flowers that have the courgettes forming behind each bloom. Once the female flowers begin to arrive then we shall leave a couple of the male flowers on to pollinate them. It's not a necessity to remove them, but I find it speeds up the production a little.<br />

The next job for the Busy Beez was to plant the tomatoes donated by our Crossing Warden. An old wooden sandpit filled with compost provided the perfect home for these cordon varieties, which as they grow will need supporting with canes.<br />

We have had a spot of rain or two, but not enough to sustain life in the Shooter's Grove Garden. Our Y2's have been watering our pots each morning, and the pumpkins have reacted accordingly, throwing up plenty of foliage, and a couple of tiny flowerbuds<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TDNnFe_x1nI/AAAAAAAAA48/lMmKtlTN_Zc/s1600/Pictures+191.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" rw="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TDNnFe_x1nI/AAAAAAAAA48/lMmKtlTN_Zc/s320/Pictures+191.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Our first job of the day was to give all the garden a really thorough soak. Not just a little shower, but at least a full watering can for each plant. This will encourage the roots to push deeper into the soil, making the plants a little more drought resistant in the long run, which is particularly important as the Summer Holidays are approaching. Fortunately this is one of the favourite jobs for the Busy Beez, and there are never any shortages of volunteers for this.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TDNocXE1JUI/AAAAAAAAA5E/tPBObE7JrzY/s1600/Pictures+192.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" rw="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TDNocXE1JUI/AAAAAAAAA5E/tPBObE7JrzY/s320/Pictures+192.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">More pumpkins here, along with yet more salad leaves.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Our main job today was to put the finishing touches to the new flowerbed. The weeds cleared, and the whole bed given a very thorough watering, the Beez set to work arranging a mulch of bark over all the bare earth. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TDNqqtI2XuI/AAAAAAAAA5M/s3NLlPoCJqM/s1600/Pictures+180.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" rw="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TDNqqtI2XuI/AAAAAAAAA5M/s3NLlPoCJqM/s320/Pictures+180.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This will help to suppress weeds, and being an effective mulch to prevent much needed water evaporating too quickly on our sandy soil. It also gives a good decorative finish to the flowerbed.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TDNqxcQ-wmI/AAAAAAAAA5U/GrNU96u-0CM/s1600/Pictures+183.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" rw="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TDNqxcQ-wmI/AAAAAAAAA5U/GrNU96u-0CM/s320/Pictures+183.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Our vegetables are flourishing, and so far, our companion plants of Nasturtiums and Calendula (Marigolds) are doing us proud by keeping the bugs away from our crops. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TDNwlOg4U2I/AAAAAAAAA5s/mtIq3LRVvA4/s1600/Pictures+184.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" rw="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TDNwlOg4U2I/AAAAAAAAA5s/mtIq3LRVvA4/s320/Pictures+184.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TDNxkQrDFZI/AAAAAAAAA50/BmLwrydQ5mQ/s1600/Pictures+190.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" rw="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TDNxkQrDFZI/AAAAAAAAA50/BmLwrydQ5mQ/s320/Pictures+190.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">One pot of Nasturtiums is actually quite infested with blackfly, but our beans are pest free thus far. Warm sunshine. A little breeze, and the excited chatter as the Busy Beez come together to overhaul an overgrown bed. Two very large Hebe's dominate the space, but they have become leggy, and lost their shape, so they have to go. But before we rolled up our sleeves, there were cuttings of the old shrubs to take. We found suitable sideshoots, and once we'd removed the lower leaves, we popped them into small pots of compost. This time next year, these should be new hebe shrubs. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TCoyu8lGx8I/AAAAAAAAA0I/HN2IR6EiTqI/s1600/Pictures+196.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" ru="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TCoyu8lGx8I/AAAAAAAAA0I/HN2IR6EiTqI/s320/Pictures+196.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">The Beez worked tirelessly today removing the old hebes. There was much digging, pulling, heaving and puffing, but not one moan or groan, and within a matter of minutes, both monsterous plants had been uprooted, like the Enormous Turnip!</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">Everyone worked really well as a team to remove any last roots and weeds in the cleared area in preparation to the planting of the new acquisitions.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

We have had little rain and our young plants can get stressed very quickly in the heat. Usually, watering is done either early in the mornings before the sun hits the plants to prevent scorch, or as the sun sets to help prevent too much evaporation. Our younger Beez have been given the responsibility of watering all our containers each morning before the sun reaches the containers. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TCHxvBVXsiI/AAAAAAAAAyY/TxACk3Lq3S8/s1600/Pictures+153.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" ru="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TCHxvBVXsiI/AAAAAAAAAyY/TxACk3Lq3S8/s320/Pictures+153.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">The Veg-e-tables in the Junior area were planted up this week. In each of these colourful containers, the Busy Beez planted a couple of cherry tomato plants called Minibel. These were started off as seeds and kept in my own greenhouse until we were ready to plant them out. This is a tomato suitable to grow in hanging baskets and containers, and the small red fruits should appeal to the children. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">At the moment, each plant has small yellow flowers, called sets. These will be visited by passing insects who will pollinate them, and then when the flowers fall off, the tiny tomatoes will be forming behind, within a few weeks, these will swell and turn red. Yummy.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TCHx0kefH4I/AAAAAAAAAyg/i_h3HxJzoJQ/s1600/Pictures+154.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" ru="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TCHx0kefH4I/AAAAAAAAAyg/i_h3HxJzoJQ/s320/Pictures+154.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Also in these containers, we have planted a variety of pepper called Razzamatazz, and a couple of courgettes called Black Beauty from the BBC's Dig In Campaign. The courgettes have flower buds already, so it shouldn't be too long before our Busy Beez begin to see the fruits of their labour.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TCHx4e6Kf7I/AAAAAAAAAyo/Yw5jP3DJoCE/s1600/Pictures+155.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" ru="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TCHx4e6Kf7I/AAAAAAAAAyo/Yw5jP3DJoCE/s320/Pictures+155.jpg" /></a></div><br />
The planters are in full sun for pretty much all of the day, so they will need attending to each day, watering, feeding, and checking for pests.Rambling Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06461179407269357363noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1383200505756656522.post-592038595701465552010-06-17T14:22:00.000-07:002010-06-17T14:24:08.718-07:00Week 14<div style="text-align: center;"> <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TBqGCFXnVvI/AAAAAAAAAvw/RYbaVDN68Ko/s1600/Pictures+121.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" qu="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TBqGCFXnVvI/AAAAAAAAAvw/RYbaVDN68Ko/s320/Pictures+121.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>There's a buzz in the air, and for once it's not a Vuvuzela! It is the hum of tiny insects busy at their work. There are flowers to pollinate, food to be had and honey to be made. They have little time for football, let alone the World Cup. <br />
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">We had a mammoth task on our hands for this weeks Busy Beez Gardening Club. All our young plants needed to be planted out. From Sweet Peas with the promise of their heavenly scent, to the Pumpkins for our Halloween Disco. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TBqAUqcV9fI/AAAAAAAAAvI/xxVsTE2PTrc/s1600/Pictures+131.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" qu="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TBqAUqcV9fI/AAAAAAAAAvI/xxVsTE2PTrc/s320/Pictures+131.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">These are our 'Veg-e-tables'. We have two at the Infants entrance and two at the Junior's. This week we planted up the ones in the Infants with pumpkins and the violas from the hanging baskets. Seeds were also sown of lettuce, beetroot and radish. These large, brightly coloured containers have already generated much interest, which hopefully will continue as the plants grow and crop.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">Mrs H kindly donated some bedding plants, which were quickly put to good use in the hanging baskets in the courtyard. Here we have the trusty stalwarts begonia's and petunia's. They might not look much right now, but in the coming weeks will explode into a fireball of colour.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TBqFMIsoeRI/AAAAAAAAAvY/p_2CF44taOc/s1600/Pictures+136.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" qu="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TBqFMIsoeRI/AAAAAAAAAvY/p_2CF44taOc/s320/Pictures+136.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">All the plants are making the most of the warmer weather this week. This includes the dreaded weeds. If allowed, these will flower and set seed, multiplying a small problem into a much larger one. As the Busy Beez only meet once a week for around 30 minutes, and we have had so many jobs to do in such a short time, weeding often gets forgotten. This week, some of our Beez made a start on conquering these beasts, beginning with the garden by the carpark.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TBqGSjm15NI/AAAAAAAAAv4/UjL5GmtU_aY/s1600/Pictures+135.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" qu="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/TBqGSjm15NI/AAAAAAAAAv4/UjL5GmtU_aY/s320/Pictures+135.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">Once cleared of dandelions, thistles, speedwell and chickweed, we were able to plant out the last of our Sunflowers and Sweetpeas, both of which will use the raillings as support. The daffoldil foliage is yet to be trimmed back, but the fresh green leaves here are those of Crocosmia, also known as 'Montbretia'. These were planted by our Beez last year, and will provide fiery orange spikes later in the year.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">There is colour to be found right now though. From the Hardy Geraniums (Cranesbill) to this little fellow. From an unfriendly looking flower spike, these beautiful Sweet Williams have burst into colour.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

However, our caretaker kept everything ticking along in our absence, and everything has grown really well.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: left;">We have some wonderful news. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">As part of our Enviromental week, we're having extended gardening club time. Just as well really because the recent heat-wave has brought eveything on at a pace. Two weeks ago, this tree in the Enviromental Garden was laden with blossom. Now it is hanging onto those last blooms desperately as the majority lay in a thick pink carpet around it's roots.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_wY9Ziz8ZI/AAAAAAAAAkQ/oCBGo3X4JhI/s1600/Pictures+043.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" gu="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_wY9Ziz8ZI/AAAAAAAAAkQ/oCBGo3X4JhI/s320/Pictures+043.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">If you listen hard enough, you can hear the faint cheeping of baby birds. I sat for a while, camera posed to see what birds they might be, and within minutes a Great Tit flew out. So fast was it, that for the life of me I couldn't get a decent shot. Each group of children who came to potter around in the garden this afternoon sat a while to watch the parents flit in and out of the bird box. A real treat.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_wZEtZidiI/AAAAAAAAAkY/tegEOGw4rBU/s1600/Pictures+044.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" gu="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_wZEtZidiI/AAAAAAAAAkY/tegEOGw4rBU/s320/Pictures+044.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The recent heat-wave has lowered the level of our pond quite considerably, making the spotting of our tadpoles much easier.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_wcnN8K_yI/AAAAAAAAAlA/HD_KAi2MPII/s1600/Pictures+050.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" gu="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_wcnN8K_yI/AAAAAAAAAlA/HD_KAi2MPII/s320/Pictures+050.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">Also brought on by the warmer weather, and nestled safely in our coldframe, we have Sunflowers which will be recycled as the seeds of the spent blooms will provide a rich source of food for our bird table in the colder months. Sweet Peas for their scent of course and Pumpkins which we hope will be ready for our Halloween Disco. All will be ready for planting out after Spring Break, weather permitting. </div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_wYpGu7bGI/AAAAAAAAAkA/kBsartIRDNg/s1600/Pictures+003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" gu="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_wYpGu7bGI/AAAAAAAAAkA/kBsartIRDNg/s320/Pictures+003.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">We had a delivery recently of some young tree saplings. Among them were Holly, Dog Rose and Hawthorn. As they were in need of a drink, they have been left overnight to soak, ready for KS2 to plant them during the rest of Enviromental Week.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_wY467qMeI/AAAAAAAAAkI/CbkWXEJidDg/s1600/Pictures+051.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" gu="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_wY467qMeI/AAAAAAAAAkI/CbkWXEJidDg/s320/Pictures+051.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">In the meantime, there were potatoes to earth up. They had certainly been making the most of the warmer weather and have reached the top of their containers. The compost was added, and the pupils found watering them a pleasure, naturally.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_wZU91pX7I/AAAAAAAAAko/fxdXJKIea_g/s1600/Pictures+046.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" gu="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_wZU91pX7I/AAAAAAAAAko/fxdXJKIea_g/s320/Pictures+046.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">In the Infant's courtyard, the foliage of the spent Spring Bulbs had to be cut down. We've actually added more compost to these long troughs and planted our French Beans, Lettuce and some of the Nasturtiums.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">The remainder of the Nasturtiums have been planted and placed close to the beans as a companion plant. This should attract aphids away from them. Marigolds have been planted for the same reason, although we intend on planting them with our tomatoes. </div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">In the 'wheel' we have so far sown carrots and some more lettuce. After the half term holiday, we shall sow our herbs in the remaining three hubs.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">We have arranged all our pots and containers in this area for now as it is nearer the outside tap. for our lovely Caretaker who will tend to them over the holiday for us.</div>Rambling Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06461179407269357363noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1383200505756656522.post-18171944691149140272010-05-18T11:24:00.000-07:002010-05-18T11:24:58.866-07:00Week 10<u>The Great Plant Hunt Week 17-22 May 2010</u> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">A weed is simply a plant growing in the wrong place.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Today the Busy Beez went on a jolly, joining other primary schools across the UK for The Great Plant Hunt Week. In this mass observation study looking for ten common plants, our Beez searched in the open spaces and hedgerows which our school is lucky to be surrounded by.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_KvC83Q8OI/AAAAAAAAAhI/Bwi6Y04Eglo/s1600/Pictures+021.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_KvC83Q8OI/AAAAAAAAAhI/Bwi6Y04Eglo/s320/Pictures+021.jpg" wt="true" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">The first to be spotted, and lets face it you can't miss them at the moment, was the humble Dandelion. A hardy perennial whose flowers are light-sensitive, opening in the early morning and closing in the evening or in gloomy weather. The name Dandelion comes from the French 'dents de lion' (teeth of the lion). At this time of the year Dandelions are extremely invasive, but they are an important source of nectar for our precious bees.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">In folklore, it is said that if you blow the fluffy seedheads of the flower away in one go it will make a wish come true. Another tale is that it can tell you the time by the amount of puffs it takes to blow away the 'clock'.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r156/MortalAngels/Garden/dandy.jpg?t=1274198732" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r156/MortalAngels/Garden/dandy.jpg?t=1274198732" width="320" wt="true" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">On the bank by the nursery playground, our hunters found Bellis Perennis, or Daisy. This tiny flower is a favourite among the girls who make chains with them. The name daisy originates from the Anglo-Saxon word 'daes eage' which translates to 'days eye', referring to the flower opening at dawn.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">It was said that in Roman times, bandages were soaked in the astringent juices of the daisies and applied to the wounds of the soldiers.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_K_KDRzHjI/AAAAAAAAAhY/NopeTYRFAsc/s1600/Pictures+011.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_K_KDRzHjI/AAAAAAAAAhY/NopeTYRFAsc/s320/Pictures+011.jpg" wt="true" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">Among the other plants hunted down were Sorrel also known as dockweed, the leaves the broad-leaved variety are often used as a soothing treatment for stinging nettles. Fortunately these two plants often grow close together.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_LCSVcPekI/AAAAAAAAAhg/SH_bhlj4_eY/s1600/Pictures+017.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_LCSVcPekI/AAAAAAAAAhg/SH_bhlj4_eY/s320/Pictures+017.jpg" wt="true" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_LK_hKFvmI/AAAAAAAAAiA/7WojKnKq9_0/s1600/Pictures+012.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_LK_hKFvmI/AAAAAAAAAiA/7WojKnKq9_0/s320/Pictures+012.jpg" wt="true" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">The flowers of the Elder were next. The strong-smelling foliage of the Elder was once hung on the mane of horses to help keep flies at bay. These days the flowers and berries are used for medicine and culinary purposes.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_LFLcCgTeI/AAAAAAAAAho/RqwhTyKg1Ys/s1600/Pictures+019.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_LFLcCgTeI/AAAAAAAAAho/RqwhTyKg1Ys/s320/Pictures+019.jpg" wt="true" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">Among the masses and masses of dandelions and speedwell we spotted our next flower. Garlic Mustard is a favourite food of the pieris napi butterfly, and the perfect home for laying their eggs. The flowers are often pollenated by midges, which may be why we were so bothered by them on our walk.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_LInz3xp-I/AAAAAAAAAhw/nI3-edd734M/s1600/Pictures+013.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VURO4bZzD1c/S_LInz3xp-I/AAAAAAAAAhw/nI3-edd734M/s320/Pictures+013.jpg" wt="true" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">We have a strong suspicion that some of the flowers have yet to appear due to the late season. These elusive blooms include the red clover, self-heal, silver birch and white campion. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the UK report their findings, and compare them to our own.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

This week we've had some pretty sharp showers during the daytime, and the night time temperatures have been below freezing. Fortunately, our young plants are safe and warm in the greenhouse at home.<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">We have had the go-ahead now for the positioning of the Busy Beez greenhouse - a patch of land between the junior playground and the Enviromental Garden. We're just waiting now for the base to be laid. Fingers crossed this will be before the half term break at the end of this month.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">In the Junior beds, our perennial herbs are flowering, much to the delight of passing insects</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />

</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">The Beez have been busy again this week. Our potatoes are growing really well, and these needed covering up again. Our main job however was to move the compost bin from one side of the Enviromental Garden to the other AND all it's contents - eugh. Lovely. I think we'll leave it there. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Staying in the Enviromental Garden, we have a magnificent tree in full bloom. Quite breathtaking!</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />

The weather shall we say has been changeable, and so cold at times you could be forgiven for thinking it was March again! <br />
The daffodils are still doing their upmost to drag the season along, but there is a bit of a lull in the Shooter's Grove gardens. We have had some pretty cold nights up here so most of the young plants are still being cosseted in my greenhouse, and the coldframe. <br />
<br />
Unfortunately, these plants do need to be potted up to give the plants some room to grow and some air to circulate if they are to thrive. If left in their seedling trays they would become overcrowded, and botrytis grey mould will soon take a hold. This could very well wipe out the whole of your seasons crop if allowed to develop.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r156/MortalAngels/Garden/Busy%20Beez/100_2472.jpg?t=1273258880" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r156/MortalAngels/Garden/Busy%20Beez/100_2472.jpg?t=1273258880" tt="true" width="320" /></a></div><br />
The best of the lettuce has been transplanted into larger modules. They look a little limp here, but once they've recovered from being potted up, they'll perk back up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r156/MortalAngels/Garden/Busy%20Beez/100_2469.jpg?t=1273259020" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="149" src="http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r156/MortalAngels/Garden/Busy%20Beez/100_2469.jpg?t=1273259020" tt="true" width="200" /></a><a href="http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r156/MortalAngels/Garden/Busy%20Beez/100_2470.jpg?t=1273259079" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="149" src="http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r156/MortalAngels/Garden/Busy%20Beez/100_2470.jpg?t=1273259079" tt="true" width="200" /></a></div><br />
These are our marigold seedlings<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r156/MortalAngels/Garden/Busy%20Beez/100_2471.jpg?t=1273259164" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r156/MortalAngels/Garden/Busy%20Beez/100_2471.jpg?t=1273259164" tt="true" width="320" /></a></div><br />
And here we have recently potted up dahilas, tomatoes and some of the marigolds.<br />
<br />
Lets hope the next couple of weeks will bring better conditions so we can prepare the containers to plant out the hardiest of our crops!Rambling Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06461179407269357363noreply@blogger.com2
